One of the main objectives of DESAFIO is to develop working relationships with a wide range of actors directly involved in different aspects of the process of democratisation of the government, management, and access to water and sanitation services. One of the instruments that we deploy to achieve this objective is the organisation of local, regional and international meetings to create spaces for the exchange of ideas and the promotion of public debate. Thus, we intend to foster the process of democratic engagement in the search for solutions to the acute problems affecting a large proportion of the population in relation to the access to essential public services. These meetings include local events in the locations of the project’s 10 case studies, such as workshops and seminars, and also the organisation of high profile national and international conferences and seminars.

International Engagement and Dissemination Meetings
First International Conference
On 25 February 2013 we held DESAFIO’s First International Conference on “Innovations and Challenges for the Democratization of Water and Sanitation Services”. The event was organized by Hermelinda Ferreira and Alexandre Ramos from our local consortium partners at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) with the support of the Project Co-ordinator. The Conference took place in the Auditorium of the Centre of Technology and Geosciences, School of Engineering of Pernambuco (CTG-EEP), Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife. International Course and Seminar
On 22-23 and 29 August 2014 we held an International Course on Elements of Political Ecology and a Seminar on “Socio-environmental Conflicts related to Essential Water and Sanitation Services”. The event was organized by Miguel Peña and Mariela Garcia from our local consortium partners at the University of the Valley (UNIVALLE), Cali, Colombia. Second International Conference
On 27-28 July 2015 we held DESAFIO’s Second International Conference on “Democratization of the politics of basic sanitation services through socio-technical innovations. Lessons to tackle the challenges”. The event was organized by Ana Lúcia Brito and her team from our local consortium partners at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) with the support of the Project Co-ordinator.
